Night Tianqiong fell to the ground, slowly closing his eyes. Blood instantly stained the golden bricks of the Holy Yang Hall.
Yun Qianyue suddenly turned her head away and a tear dropped from her eye.
Rong Jing withdrew his gaze from below and looked at Yun Qianyue. He lifted his jade-like hand and gently wiped away the tear from the corner of her eye with his finger, his eyes gentle as though painted in poetry. Although he did not speak, his actions were filled with endless warmth.
Yun Qianyue forced a smile and looked at him.
"Don't smile! It's even uglier than crying; it would be better if you cried." Rong Jing patted Yun Qianyue’s head and whispered to her.
Yun Qianyue stopped smiling, closed her eyes for a moment, and when she reopened them, they were calm.
Rong Jing withdrew his hand and continued looking down below.
Following Rong Jing's lead, Yun Qianyue also looked down.
"Second Brother!" Night Tianyu shouted mournfully. This shout was full of deep brotherly affection. He pushed aside the sword Qin Yuning had placed on his shoulder and rushed to Night Tianqiong, bending down to embrace him.
Whether it was because Night Tianyu no longer cared or if Qin Yuning was too shocked by Night Tianqiong's words and suicide attempt in front of her, she was knocked back two steps by the force. She stared at Night Tianqiong, who lay on a pool of blood, pale-faced and bloodless. The sword in her hand slipped from her grasp and clattered to the ground.
"Second Brother!" Night Tianyu shouted again, shaking Night Tianqiong forcefully.
"Fourth... brother... I... will go... first..." Night Tianqiong seemed to still have a breath left. His eyes struggled open, and he spoke in confusion, "I'll go ahead."
"Second Brother, wait for me! I'm coming with you!" Night Tianyu's eyes were red as he picked up the sword that Night Tianqiong had dropped on the ground, intending to commit suicide.
Night Tianyi suddenly acted, lightly waving his sleeve and breaking the sword from Night Tianyu’s hand. The sword clattered to the ground again.
"Night Tianyi! Am I even allowed to die" Night Tianyu raised his head, red eyes angrily staring at Night Tianyi.
"Has Fourth Brother forgotten about your concubine who is still in the Fourth Prince's Manor If you were to die, what would become of her" Night Tianyi looked at Night Tianyu and slowly said.
"If I die, she will naturally die too! She lives for me and dies for me!" Night Tianyu gritted his teeth as he answered.
"Dying is easy for you, but if you were to die, it might not be so easy for her." Night Tianyi said slowly.
"What do you mean" Night Tianyu glared at Night Tianyi.
"It means exactly what Fourth Brother would think of! Zhao Kehan is such a woman that she's worth sparing. At the very least, we should leave her alive. If Fourth Brother feels relieved by dying first, then go ahead and die. But if you can't be at ease without killing her first, then you must do so before taking your own life. Otherwise, I truly don't want to see Miss Zhao dying with you; I would definitely stop it." Night Tianyi met Night Tianyu's gaze calmly: "After some time passes, she might forget about the desire to die. Who knows if she will remember you then"
"You..." Night Tianyu was furious, his fiery red eyes almost spitting fire.
But Night Tianyi said no more; he stood quietly and watched Night Tianyu and Night Tianqiong in his arms.
"Fourth Brother... Big brother is leaving first... Don't be hasty..." Night Tianqiong's blood seemed to have run dry, with no more blood flowing from the corner of his mouth. His gaze became unfocused, and his voice grew softer until it was barely audible, "Moon... sister..."
Although his voice was extremely muddled and low, in the silent Holy Yang Hall at this moment, everyone still heard him clearly.
"Second Brother, is there anything you want to tell Moon Sister Tell me and I will convey it to her." Night Tianyu withdrew his gaze from Night Tianyi's direction, holding Night Tianqiong tightly as he said urgently.
"Moon... sister... I... love her..." Night Tianqiong struggled to utter these words before finally losing the strength to support himself any longer. His arm dropped, and there was no more sound from him at all.
Upon hearing this, Night Tianyu silently watched Night Tianqiong as his arm fell, saw his eyes close completely, felt his heart stop beating in his chest, and noticed the warmth of his body dissipating. Though he appeared calm, there was no surprise on his face at the words Night Tianqiong had spoken before dying; even though Night Tianqiong could not hear him anymore, he still said, "Rest assured, I will convey your message to Moon Sister!"
Yun Qianyue turned her head again this time without shedding a tear. Her face was indescribably desolate and solemn.
Rong Jing tilted his head and glanced at her but did not speak.
"Wicked son! Even after death, he still thinks about women! I, Night family, do not have such descendants!" The old emperor's voice was as heavy and oppressive as dark clouds pressing down. His protruding eyes stared at Ye Tianqing with a look that suggested if he could get out of bed, he would strike another blow.
"Father Emperor, you don't want sons like us! Do you know that we even disdain to reincarnate into this family name What's wrong with remembering women My second brother loves Yue Ermei in his heart. Where is the mistake in that At least he’s better than you; Yue Ermei doesn’t detest him now, though she does not like him either. But what about you The woman you love detests you so much that she won't even look at you until her last breath All your women are only attracted by your status as Emperor, none of them truly love you. In my view, my second brother is far better than you. At least he’s not as ruthless as you and knows how to love someone properly." Ye Tianyu looked up with resentment, glaring at the old emperor.
"Wicked son!" The old emperor was furious.
"Father Emperor, you could try something new instead of always calling us wicked sons! Without your misdeeds, would we have been born" Ye Tianyu sneered as he looked back at the old emperor. "My second brother said it right. This Night dynasty is stolen land, even this imperial palace belongs to the Murong family now. Deceiving the world and stealing fame, robbing the country and homes, causing disasters upon people, committing countless sins; we, as descendants of the Night family, also find it disgraceful for such misdeeds. The Night dynasty will collapse one day just like what happened a hundred years ago to the Murong family. All ancestors and successors of the imperial clan in the Night family will turn into ashes, never to be revived."
"You…" The old emperor was enraged again by these words, his eyes turning red as he glared at Ye Tianyu with extreme fear, shouting: "Scoundrel! Wicked son! Beast! Tiyan, kill him now! Kill this wicked son for me!"
"Father Emperor, please calm down!" said Ye Tianyi.
"Well then, is my word no longer valid" The old emperor turned to look at Ye Tianyi, flames of rage in his eyes as he shouted: "Didn't you hear the nonsense he was saying Such a wicked son deserves death. What are you waiting for"
"I heard it!" said Ye Tianyi calmly.
"Did hearing that make you kill him for me" The old emperor roared.
"I think letting the fourth brother stay alive is better! He can live to see if I can defend this Night dynasty," Ye Tianyi said coolly.
"Ye Tianyi, so this was your intention all along! Even if I were still alive, you wouldn't be able to hold onto power. Whether it's the remnants of the previous dynasty or other small kingdoms like Southern Liang and Southern Frontier gradually breaking free from Heavenly Holy control; with Dōnghǎi being rich in resources and military might, this world will eventually no longer belong to the Night family." Ye Tianyu shouted loudly: "Ye Tianyi, today's fate of my brother and me will be your fate tomorrow."
"It seems difficult for me to share such a fate!" Ye Tianyi said calmly without any sign of anger. To Princess No. 6, he said: “Six Sister, please go check if Wenlai has invited the people.”
Princess Six responded and hurried out.
"I said kill him! Kill this wicked son! He doesn't deserve to be part of Night family!" The old emperor still roared loudly.
No longer speaking, Ye Tianyi did not look at the old emperor again.
“Father Emperor, I find it laughable that you shout like this. Don’t you understand now This imperial palace and even the entire Heavenly Holy Dynasty are no longer under your control! The one who has authority now is my seventh brother. Even two women listen to him; how many people in the palace still dare not follow his command, including Wenlai.” Ye Tianyu looked at the old emperor with a mocking gaze as he lay on the bed and raged.
The old emperor glared at Ye Tianyu with fiery eyes. After a moment, he turned to glare at Ye Tianyi; suddenly, he opened his mouth and spat out blood. He tried to sit up but fell back onto the bed unconscious.
"Miss Qin, please ask Taisheng to come over for an examination," said Ye Tianyi to Qin Yuning.
“Yes, Seventh Prince!” Qin Yuning responded and hurried away.
“Seventh Brother, they’re here!” Princess No. 6 walked out from outside followed by a group of people.
Ye Tianyi looked at the door as Duke De, Duke Xian, Marquis Yun, and Chancellor Qin entered; he didn’t see Ye Qingran, Rong Feng, and Leng Shaozhuo. He calmly asked: "Duke Uncle, Duke Uncles and Chancellor, where are Prince Ye Qingran, Prince Leng, and Lord Feng"
After the four people entered, they seemed to be stunned by the corpses lying around in various positions inside the Holy Yang Hall, especially when seeing Ye Tianyu holding Ye Tianqin on the ground with him covered in blood and silent. They stopped for a moment, staring at the scene before them without hearing Ye Tianyi’s words.
"Duke Uncle, Duke Uncles, and Chancellor, where are Prince Ye Qingran, Prince Leng, and Lord Feng" asked Ye Tianyu again.
"Seventh Prince, they’re drunk now! They can’t come. Just now they were sent back to their residences in a mess. Especially that rascal Ye Qingran, he’s so drunk that he doesn’t know anything," Duke De was the first to recover and said quickly.
Ye Tianyi nodded: "Even though they couldn't come, you’re here. Anyway, my second brother and fourth brother played a joke on Father Emperor who wanted to kill them. I originally called you over to plead for mercy, but now it seems unnecessary since the Father Emperor is ill again and has fainted. Please see how we should deal with the Fourth Brother." With that, he glanced at the four of them.
The four looked towards the emperor’s bed, indeed seeing the old emperor unconscious, his body spattered with blood, a terrifying appearance; below him lay another woman who was also unconscious and unrecognizable except for her attire which identified her as Mingfei.
Glancing over Mingfei, they stared at Ye Tianqing’s corpse and Ye Tianyu holding him again. No one answered immediately.
"Duke Uncle De, what do you think about how to deal with this situation" Ye Tianyi asked Duke De.
"This… " Glancing at the other three, Duke De cautiously replied: "Since the Emperor is unconscious now, Seventh Prince has been acting as regent all along. It’s best if you handle it."
“The other two dukes and Chancellor also think like Duke Uncle” Ye Tianyi looked at the other three.
"Brother D serves right! Since the Emperor remains unconscious, it has been Prince Jing’s duty to oversee state affairs all along. You may handle this matter as you see fit!" Both King Xiao and Cloud King nodded in agreement.
The Chancellor Qin quickly chimed in, "Indeed, this matter can be handled by Prince Jing. We shall follow his instructions."
Ye Tianyi nodded slowly and said languidly, "Although I am the one overseeing state affairs, Young Master Jing輔政 also has a say!"
"This…" The Prince of Merit frowned. "Young Master Jing has come of age today, as has Miss Qianyue. Prince Jing is aware that both have left their guests and gone missing…"
"Ye Tianyi, what’s the point of this talk! If you want to kill, then kill; if you want to torture, then do so! Go fetch Hanie now, and we’ll die for your satisfaction!" Ye Tianyu interrupted Prince Merit and glared at Ye Tianyi.
"I’ve already said that Brother Two’s suicide was merely a joke with Father Emperor—far from being a capital offense. I couldn’t stop him, but since I won’t let Father Emperor kill you now, neither will I. Nor will I summon your concubine for joint suicides. Don’t entertain such thoughts." Ye Tianyi glanced indifferently at Ye Tianyu and turned to Prince Merit. "Uncle D, take Brother Four into custody first! We’ll decide what to do when Father Emperor recovers and Young Master Jing returns!"
"Yes!" The Prince of Merit responded swiftly.
"Brother Four, you’d better not think about dying. I mean it! If you take your own life, the fate that awaits your concubine will be unimaginable." Ye Tianyi warned him coolly.
Ye Tianyu glared at Ye Tianyi for a moment before his anger dissipated and he suddenly laughed. "My dear Brother Seven, rest assured. From now on, even if you order me to die, I won’t! There are words from Brother Two that I must convey to Moon Sister; how could I die then Besides, I want to watch closely as you fail just like us. And more than anything, I wish to see for how long you can sit upon the revered throne of this Imperial Dynasty."
"It’s best if Brother Four sees reason and stops worrying me!" Ye Tianyi said, no longer looking at Ye Tianyu but turning instead to Prince Merit.
The Prince of Merit shouted out loud, "Someone!"
Several people rushed in almost immediately.
"Take the Fourth Prince into custody and detain him under strict watch!" The Prince of Merit commanded them.
"Yes!" Those men responded instantly.
"I don’t need your escort; I’ll go myself!" Ye Tianyu released his hold on Ye Tianqiong, stood up, and strode out. The few men drew their swords and pointed them at him as they followed him out of the palace hall. Prince Merit watched them leave but, concerned about his duties in charge of the Ministry of Punishments, he decided to follow too.
The King Xiao, Cloud King, and Chancellor Qin looked towards Ye Tianyi.
"Cold Uncle," said Ye Tianyi to the King Xiao. "Take your men and surround the Fourth Prince’s residence. Keep an eye on Zhao Kehan and tell her that Brother Four is alive but detained in the Ministry of Punishments’ prison. If she wants him to live, she must stay put."
"Yes! I’ll go immediately!" The King Xiao accepted his orders and hurried off.
"Chancellor Qin," Ye Tianyi turned to Chancellor Qin.
"Prince Jing commands!" Chancellor Qin lowered his head respectfully.
"Escort your men to clean up the imperial palace and every corner of the capital city. By dawn tomorrow, I don’t want to see any trace of blood or corpses anywhere." Ye Tianyi instructed.
"Yes! I’ll go immediately!" Chancellor Qin took his orders and hurriedly left.
"Cloud Uncle," Ye Tianyi turned to Cloud King.
"I’m here, Uncle!" The Cloud King stepped forward promptly with an extremely submissive attitude.
"You’re responsible for sending Brother Two’s body back to his residence and arranging a suitable burial day. Let the Imperial Astronomical Bureau choose a proper date. This is also within the purview of the Ministry of Rites." Ye Tianyi instructed him.
"Yes! I’ll immediately take Prince Jing’s body back!" The Cloud King responded promptly, bellowing out orders to his attendants and guards who entered the chamber. He indicated towards Ye Tianqiong's corpse; two men understood immediately and carried it away while he followed closely behind. At the door, he turned around suddenly and asked, "Prince Jing, how should we proceed with the burial Should it be according to the prince’s rites…"
"Royal rite, a grand funeral!" Ye Tianyi said.
"Yes!" The Cloud King nodded in understanding and quickly left the palace hall.
In the chamber were only Empress Mother Ming who remained unconscious and the bodies of maidservants and eunuchs strewn about. Princess Six and Ye Tianyi remained as well.
The Sixth Princess glanced at Ye Tianyi before walking towards the Mingfei and helping her up, shouting, "Mother, wake up!"
Mingfei remained motionless.
"Seventh Brother!" The Sixth Princess called out several more times. Mingfei still did not move; she looked at Ye Tianyi.
Ye Tianyi’s gaze was fixed on Mingfei. After a moment, he said to the Sixth Princess, "Don’t worry, Sixth Sister. Consort Mingfei is merely suffering from poor circulation and has lost some blood. She fainted because of it. Take her back to the palace and have Imperial Physician give her an herbal prescription after that. With proper rest, she will be fine."
The Sixth Princess seemed relieved as she nodded her head and shouted outside, "Someone!"
Two people entered.
"Help my mother back to the palace," said the Sixth Princess as she let go of Mingfei and stood up. She gave orders to those two people.
The two immediately walked over and carried Mingfei, following the Sixth Princess out of the Holy Yang Hall.
"Wenlai!" Ye Tianyi called out.
"Your Highness, I am here!" Wenlai immediately came in.
"Send someone to clean up this place," ordered Ye Tianyi.
Wenlai hurriedly agreed and went outside to call for people. Soon, more than ten palace guards entered the room; two by two, they carried away the dead eunuchs and maidservants while cleaning up the bloodstains. In no time at all, the Holy Yang Hall was spotless except for the heavy smell of blood that remained in the air, completely masking the fact that a prince had died here.
Wenlai quietly led his people to clean the inner palace and then silently left.
In the hall, besides the unconscious old emperor, there was only Ye Tianyi. He looked up at the ceiling, calmly calling out, "Prince Jing, Moon, come down!"
There was no sound from above after he called out.
"I know you are here," said Ye Tianyi again.
Still no sound came from above.
"Moon, did you hear what my second brother said before he died You were far away and probably didn’t hear him. I don’t need Fourth Brother to tell you; I will tell you myself. He said that he loved you," Ye Tianyi continued.
There was still no sound from above.
Ye Tianyi frowned as he looked up at the ceiling, then withdrew his gaze and spoke in a very low voice, almost unheard, "Are they really not here"
"Seventh Prince!" Qin Yuning’s voice sounded from outside.
Ye Tianyi put on a solemn expression. He turned around and looked at the door, “Come in!”
Qin Yuning pulled aside the curtain and walked in followed by an imperial physician of the Imperial Medical Institute. She respectfully said to Ye Tianyi, "All the imperial physicians of the Imperial Medical Institute are here."
"Send some people to attend to Consort Mingfei’s quarters, and some to the Empress’ quarters. Mother Empress was also startled today. The rest will stay here to treat Emperor Father," said Ye Tianyi.
“Yes!” All the imperial physicians responded in unison.
"You are tired from your work today. Go back to the Chancellor’s residence and get some rest," said Night Sky Tilt to Qin Yuning.
Qin Yuning nodded her head and left.
In no time at all, all the imperial physicians of the Imperial Medical Institute had been assigned their tasks and divided into three groups: one heading for Empress Dowager’s quarters, another going to Consort Mingfei's quarters, and the rest staying in Holy Yang Hall.
The imperial physicians who remained to treat the old emperor were all visibly nervous; they knew what had happened today. Now that the Seventh Prince was treating the emperor instead of asking them to do it, and yet still having them here as if nothing had changed, what did this mean No one dared to guess, only being careful in their work like walking on thin ice. They found the Emperor's pulse extremely weak, his blood and qi seriously damaged. Although the Seventh Prince had been treating him for a couple of days now with some improvement, it was all undone now and even worse than before; he was almost at death’s door. There was no hope of recovery! The imperial physicians exchanged glances but none dared to prescribe medicine.
After Ye Tianyi assigned everyone their tasks, he ignored them and turned around to open a window in the Holy Yang Hall. A cold breeze blew in, dispersing some of the blood smell in the air. He stood by the window for a moment before slowly turning back and sitting down on his chair, beginning to review memorials as if nothing had happened in this imperial city or palace.
The court physicians had not prescribed any medicine for a long time and they all turned to Ye Tianyi, who was busy with secret documents. Seeing that he did not seem to care about the matter, the doctors didn’t dare prescribe medication either. An elderly physician tentatively called out, "Seventh Prince"
“Hmm!” Ye Tianyi replied in a cold tone without raising his head.
“His Majesty’s illness… His Majesty’s illness… may not be able to hold on much longer. Our medical skills are limited. What do you think we should do…” the old physician looked at Ye Tianyi, afraid that one wrong word could cost him his life.
“Father is nearing death; there is no cure for medicine and herbs. Just prescribe something隨便開藥吧!” Ye Tianyi casually threw out a sentence.
The elderly physician saw that Ye Tianyi didn’t get angry and he breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed like the Seventh Prince knew more about His Majesty’s illness than they did; it had already reached its end stage. He exchanged glances with several other physicians, gathered together to discuss possible prescriptions in hushed tones.
In the Holy Yang Hall, Ye Tianyi’s brush strokes on the memorial and the murmurs of the court physicians merged into one sound.
On the roof of the Holy Yang Hall, Yun Qianmo withdrew her gaze and looked at Rong Jing.
Rong Jing also retracted his gaze and reached out to wrap an arm around her waist. He took her away from the roof of the Holy Yang Hall without making a sound along their original route into the underground passage. After entering the tunnel, he moved swiftly, carrying her through it in no time.
The exit of the tunnel was naturally outside the palace’s rear wall.
Outside the palace, the air was cold and crisp; blue skies with white clouds contrasted sharply with the dark atmosphere shrouded by blood and death within the palace walls.
Yun Qianmo looked up to the sky and exhaled a breath of turbid air. Her complexion appeared somewhat gloomy.
Rong Jing glanced at Yun Qianmo as he held her waist, his figure moving fluidly as he carried her across layers of buildings like wisps of cloud smoke towards the city’s outskirts.
After walking for a while, Yun Qianmo noticed they weren’t heading back to the Yun王府 but instead out of the city. She tilted her head and asked Rong Jing, "Where are you taking me"
"The place that you want to go now is where I will take you." Rong Jing lowered his head and looked at Yun Qianmo, saying in a warm tone.
Yun Qianmo tilted her head up to look at him. "How do you know I want to go somewhere"
Rong Jing pointed at the spot on her chest with his hand that wasn’t holding her waist and said, “Because you’ve always been in my heart; what’s on your mind is naturally known by me.”
Yun Qianmo felt a warmth in her heart as she looked at him. The gloominess on her face dissipated somewhat, but she didn’t say anything and glared at him instead.
Rong Jing stopped talking too and carried Yun Qianmo towards the city gate. Along the way through streets and alleys, soldiers were cleaning up the traces of blood. In the main street covered in blood, Prince Xiaoqin personally supervised a team to clean it up without even daring to touch it with his hands.
After exiting the city gates, Rong Jing walked Yun Qianmo for some distance before halting and landing gracefully on the ground. His delicate fingers lightly flicked out, sending a white smoke into the air that exploded upward.
Yun Qianmo followed where Rong Jing’s finger pointed upwards to see a white lotus bloom in the sky.
"Young Master!" Qing Ying appeared and respectfully called out to Rong Jing.
"Go to Lingtai Temple and inform Master Ciyun that Ye Tianyi and Miss Yun Qianmo will be using their Dharma Hall for a while," Rong Jing instructed Qing Ying.
Qing Ying responded and instantly left the spot, heading toward Lingtai Temple.
Rong Jing watched as Qing Ying departed and then turned to Yun Qianmo. "Shall we walk a bit"
"Hmm!" Yun Qianmo nodded in agreement.
Rong Jing pulled Yun Qianmo forward at a leisurely pace; they walked slowly, their steps synchronized with no words exchanged between them. The sound of two pairs of shoes scraping against the ground could be heard from beneath them.
Shortly after, snowflakes began to fall from the sky.
Yun Qianmo stopped walking and looked up at the sky; the clear blue skies had turned into a vast expanse of gray and white. She gazed at the sky and said to Rong Jing, "The snow has finally come this year!"
"Perhaps once it starts, there will be no stopping," Rong Jing looked up at the sky too, his voice faint.
Yun Qianmo fell silent as she stared into the skies. Snowflakes drifted down from the heavens and landed on her face and eyebrows, chillingly cold. They melted instantly upon reaching her eyelashes, transforming into crystal-clear water droplets covering her lashes. She stood still, not blinking an eye.
Rong Jing withdrew his gaze from the sky, covering Yun Qianyue's face with his hand, which also covered her eyes.
Yun Qianyue blinked. A drop of melted snow fell onto Rong Jing’s palm, making it slightly wet.
The two stayed like this for a moment before Rong Jing lowered his hand and said in a gentle tone, "Let's go."
Yun Qianyue nodded and followed Rong Jing forward.
Half an hour later, the duo arrived at Lingtai Temple’s mountain gate. Master Ci Yun with several elders were already waiting there. Upon seeing them arrive, they all immediately clasped their hands together to greet them. "Amitabha! Prince Jing and Miss Qianyue pay their respects!"
"Master Abbot and the幾位長老行禮道:“阿彌陀佛,景世子和淺月小姐有禮了!”
